For those that drive, the rules of the road are pretty easy for us to follow as we see them via signs, we have driver manuals and if needed, corrected either socially or via by law. If we do not obey the rules of the road, there are accidents. Social skills are similar to driving, if we do not follow the rules, there are "social accidents" where someone is usually left hurt, annoyed, angry or frustrated. The challenge is, there are no clear signs, road maps or manual. Other than some verbal correction, many are driving their social vehicle blindly and a there are more than a few "Social" accidents.
People pick up social cues from parents, read body language, can interpret non verbals, inference and have a desire to be connected socially. . For some, the above is a challenge and often inhibits their ability to make and keep friends, get promotions in a job, work in a team and find lasting and meaningful relationships.
